It was originally called a Jeep

Just like many other pieces of machinery developed in the 20th century, the Land Cruiser was a product of war. America has a whole new war to fight with Korea and at the time, chose to keep things simple. They placed an order for 100 Japanese Jeeps with Toyota.

At the time, the Jeeps were reckoned to be more powerful and huge enough to provide aid in the Korean War. The local authorities saw the potential in the machine and started placing orders of their own, giving birth to the Toyota Jeep. Well, the name didn’t go well with American car brands like Willys, so Toyota had changed the name to Toyota BJ at first, then changed it again to Toyota Land Cruiser.

It once had a model dubbed the “Iron Pig”

Throughout the years, there have been so many ugly car designs that have gotten some serious backlash from drivers, but nothing really beats the 55 Series when it was released. You could say it was the least desirable object on planet earth. While cars weren’t truly magnificent back then, the FJ55 was on the extreme end of ugly such that it would be dubbed the “Iron Pig”.
